Naming Your bike
Well I saw a thread in the commuting forum with the same title and thought it would be cool to see what names people have for their touring (or other) bikes and why.
I named my Trek 520 Madeleine after The Decemberists song "Apology Song". I got this song right before my first big tour in Europe and it clicked with me.
Anyone else?

apocryphal sobriquet
I recently realized my LHT's name is Fred. That's an incidental "F" shaped piece of white reflective tape followed by a red rectangular piece of tape.

My touring bike is "Tipsy" because it falls over a lot. It's full name is actually "Tipsy, you son-of-a-*****" because it was frustrating to watch it fall over all the time. I finally got a parking brake, which helped some, but the name stuck.

When they learn to come when i call their names, i will name them. I can't keep my kid names straight; it doesn't make any sense to name my bikes. Someone please explain this phenomenon to me.

My LHT is Camion. It's named after a horse I knew, and also means truck in French.
************
camion
noun
1. a large truck designed to carry heavy loads; usually without sides [syn: lorry]
2. a low heavy horse cart without sides; used for haulage [syn: dray]

While touring with my then-13 y.o. daughter, she named our bikes.
Hers: Matthias (the heroic warrior mouse in the Redwall books).
Mine: Roland (the Headless Thompson Gunner).

Oddly, my touring bike got a name, but the road and mountain bike didn't. The touring bike is heavy and slow, but goes forever. Somehow it reminded me of Gimli's run with Aragorn and the elf, whose name escapes me at the moment.

My previus commuter was named Barney, it was a purple Trek 850 MTB conversion! My green LHT is named The Hulk, for obvious reasons! My road bike is silver, named the same.

My mountain bike is the mountain bike. My old road bike is the old road bike. The new road bike is the new road bike.

My youngest daughter's is Red, oldest daughter rides Wembley, my son has Gobo and Boober, my daily driver is Mokey, and my mountain bike conversion is Milly. Originally it was named Marjory the trash heap but my kids couldn't pronounce that. We've also got the kids BMX bikes: Tom, Jerry, and Smurfette.

My Trek 7.5fx is named Roark, after the protagonist of Rand's The Fountainhead. (Howard Roark had red hair, and it's a red bike. And more importantly, Roark went his own way in a world of gutless conformity, which is what I try to do in cycling.
I named the Yakima Big Tow trailer the Wussy Wagon after an insult someone made to me on the Clydesdale/Athena Forum. The actual comment was "wussy wagon rider."

I inadvertently named mine "Bessie." I found myself saying "come on Bessie" as I was climbing up hills and the name stuck. I figured it fits. Bessie sounds like a mule (no offense to any bessies out there) so kinda goes along with the idea of a touring bike.
