Tip for camping

I'm packing now to go on a regular camping trip and realized some
camping-tourers might could use my idea. I pack spices in these
little containers made for small fishing supplies. Each section is a
little cup with threaded top and bottom. They all screw together
into one stack. There is a top-only piece so the highest section
isn't open at the top.

I included a bottle cage for size perspective.

This summer I hooked up on tour with a lady who was carrying a similar selection of spices, 3 pots, a frying pan and, I kid you not, a kitchen sink.

Anything but minimalist. We always camp in sites that have a picnic table. The entire table is converted
to a kitchen, and we usually cant sit there.

Im not afraid of minimalist camping or backpacking, but my love of cooking requires all of the gear.
Ill take pics of the setup and post them on monday.

Are you familiar with film cannisters ... from the good ol' days of film cameras? Well, Canadian Tire sells "shaker" tops for them to turn them into salt and pepper shakers. On car camping trips, that's what I use for my salt, pepper, and spices. They are small, compact, and easy to pack. A person could use them for cycletouring as well.


BTW - valygrl, Rowan bought a kitchen sink for us ... and it's great. We used it car camping this summer, but it could easily be used cycletouring as well. It's plastic, and folds completely flat. We can easily tuck it in with our folding dishes.

I use those exact same containers for seed beads......No more than 4 High.....They have a nasty tendency to pop open...nothing like Cayenne Pepper all over yer undies!!!!.

Good idea! I usually use tiny ziplock bags for salt, pepper, and spice mix.

Ziplocks are lighter and are more easily coerced into various shaped spaces. If you are worried about leakage, put all of them into one larger/thicker ziplock, and store them away from pointy things, and never with clothes. The scent could attract animals to the person wearing those clothes.

That's pretty cool. I wonder how well that would fit in a bear bin.

I use the film canister pop tops myself. Very nice to have while camping.

We have a few film canisters but the tops come off them sometimes. We haven't found them ideal. Next time we see some fishing containers.... ;)

I take the spices that I am going to use and I mix them in a ziplock, so when I empty the bag I do not have to worry about carrying empty containers.

On backpacking.net they have a page about using drinking straws for dry things salt and pepper like stuff. You cut a ring and fold it over. A bit ingenious I think. Here is the link

For me, camping spices means "salt and pepper". For backpacking, you can use this:

That whole unit is a little longer than a single film can, but smaller diameter.
