Any Brands allow customization?
Im in the market for a new touring/ sturdy road/ fire trail bike to complement my lightweight path racing type bike and I am wondering if anyone allows customization for similar price. I have been looking around and the Jamis aurora seems like a good fit with its lower top tube (i have short legs) and other specs, but I really dont like brifters, and I have a thing for bar end shifters. Does Jamis or any other comparable brand offer customization? I know trek does for Madone and such, but obviously that not what im looking for plus its out of my price range.

Your LBS can usually swap out components like that without any problems. They probably won't even charge as long as the components are of comparable value.

Check with Bike Friday even if you don't need the fold they're great for smaller riders and you can pick each component. I got a Pocket Llama this summer for touring and like it better than my diamond frame.

see if your shop will work with you, as Bacciagalupe suggested. if not, see if there are other jamis dealers in your area who will work with you. if not, but the aurora from someone nice or somewhere cheap (like, ebay, craigslist), buy some 9spd barcons and some regular drop braKe levers, throw them on the jamis and ebay the brifters. or, see if you like the fit-n-feel of a cross check or lht or raleigh sojourn or any other bike that comes stock with barcons, if you're not the mechanical type.

Unless you find a friendly LBS this sounds like a great DIY project. Craigslist and ebay can be a good source for used but usable parts.

Your not looking at really changing that much--- your LBS should change out the brifters for bar-end shifters for no more than $100 extra, plus give you back the stock brifters. You might be able to sell them on EBAY for something close to that. (maybe not)
Overall, it's not too big of deal. It won't add a lot of extra cash to the cost of the bike.
You could get a better frame and build up a custom bike, but that will cost double what your Jamis.
