favorite hubs for winter touring?

Hi,

My touring ambitions at the moment are fairly wimpy. I would like to go somewhere warm enough in winter that riding all day isn't too taxing, and somewhere interesting and pleasant enough that staying in one hotel for a week or so would be pleasant in and of itself, when combined with day trips on the bike.

I'd love to try this in France, Spain or Italy, but southern US or somewhere would be possible too, since presumably that would be significantly cheaper. I'd love to hear from anyone who has done this successfully; in theory I could just put a pin in a map, but I'd find it easier if some of you guys had suggestions to help me narrow things down. At the moment my top candidate is Avignon, but that could change.

thanks

Bear in mind that France, Spain and Italy aren't necessarily going to be particularly warm or dry in the depths of winter (IIRC Rome is the same latitude as Washington DC) - especially in the more mountainous bits. But don't let that put you off! Andalucía and southern Italy would be good bets in late autumn and early Spring. If you're in the US then Central and southern America would be worth considering and exchange rates might be more favourable (not sure what's been happening lately with the dollar-euro exchange rate).

I wouldn't cycle a tour in Europe in December, January, February at all. Even North Africa is not so good. The days are quite short even if the weather is fine.

March Morocco: A lot of rain in February a lot of streets have been flooded
March Jordan: +/- 0 °C lightly snow
January Egypt: -10 °C at night in the Sinai

I am touring through Southern Mexico and Central America in January and February. It is the dry season, weather ranges from extremely hot and humid in the jungle to pretty cool in the highlands. It is a point A to point B tour though, I am not using one city as a base for exploration.
