Hi there
I just got my new bike today, and the rims I got with it are Mavic A119 which have a hole that is compatible for a presta valve, and I was just wondering if it is possible to switch the tube i have which are presta to a tube with schrader valves?

there is a tiny plastic ring in the hole where the valve stem goes, and was wondering if this thing will pop out of the rim or is built into the rim? and if it does pop out will there be enough room to fit a schrader valve stem into it? thank you. =)

dont even think about it just get presta and a shrader adapter for an air compresser. its a dollar cmon.

Does it attach to the valve or the air compressor? because I have an air pump for a schrader valve that goes onto my bike...

wont have an air compressor in the middle of nowhere haha

Great thanks.... presta piss me off, can't use the air compressor's at gas stations, and if you touch it wrong all the air rushes out

Pop the plastic nubbin out and use a schraeder. If it still doesn't fit, get your LBS to drill it out to fit. Yes, this is a common solution and a specific drill bit is sold to do such a task. Don't worry!

Heh, yeah I just went and pulled it out of the rim with my fingernail, I didn't even think to try, and the schrader valve I have fits

I`m betting you can just pop it out. I had a pair of Mavic Crossmax wheels (no idea what rims go into that wheelset) that came like yours and that`s what I did- seems to be designed exactly for that option. FWIW, your pump may be able to adapt to either valve type by unscrewing the cap where the valve goes in and flipping over a little plastic bushing. But I prefer Schraeder anyway.

I prefer presta, but make sure the rims can handle either, that way if I get caught in the middle of nowhere I can run whatever is available. They make an adapter that fits on the presta valve to allow you to use standard air chucks to air up a tire, leave it screwed onto one of the valves and it should always be there for you. As a general rule I prefer NOT to use an air compressor, I have had problems with them in the past...eating my money and not giving me any air in return. My Topeak Morph hasn't failed me yet

If you so prefer, you can drill it out yourself, no special bit is needed and then take either a small round file and/or a piece of emery cloth to smooth out the edge. We used to do this for the reason wahoo stated above, in case you end up needing a tube in the middle of nowhere and all you have is a Walmart to choose from. If you do want to use presta tubes after you have done this, simply use a small rubber washer or one of the plastic inserts available to make sure your tube doesn't expand and find its way into the opening where it might become damaged. But I will say that many don't bother with this precaution and have no problems.

What I do Eric is go to a bike shop and have them tap the rim so that the schrader valve fits. Presta valves are far too quirky for me; they almost always crack and leak right by the stem, which means they cannot be patched. My hand help pump grabs onto a schrader valve with alot more OOMPH than it ever did with the prestas.

I believe that's exactly what that plastic bit is for: converting the rim from presta to schraeder. The A719's have the same bit.

I'll take the inserts. I went the other way around. It would be nice to have inserts that take up the extra space.

Spin, run down to your local Lowe's and in the small parts bin, get a couple of Hillman 7/16 OD X 1/4 ID rubber grommets. They only cost a few cents and they just slide right down over the presta valve before you reinsert it back through the larger schrader hole. They work great, cost nothing, are reusable and they won't ever rattle.

I'm glad someone started this thread as I have been debating about drilling my rims just for an emergency situation. I could have used it last year when I pulled out the two new tubes that I bought only to find out they were Schrader, duh. What is the size of the hole? Is it 7/16"?

According to Sheldon (pbuh) it is 21/64". You are weakening the rim by doing this. On wider rims, it won't be a problem though.
