Need help planning a long distance trip.

Hello, I'm new here. Me and a friend are planning a trip from St. Louis to Los Angeles in early June. I was wondering what bike you might recommend for the trip. Also, we are then taking a plan to New Zealand, so a bike that can be disassembled and stored easily on the plane would be good. We have planned out what supplies we will need for the most part, but cannot find a definitive suggestion as to what bike to use. Sadly we cannot afford the $2,000 bikes but we can afford 800-1000 for the bike alone, and will be looking for used deals. Any suggestion is appreciated and if you have a gently used bike for sale also let me know, thank you for your time.

Is that $800 to $1K each, or the two of you together? Have you budgeted for racks and panniers and so on?

There are a gazillion threads about this. The search function is your friend.

800-1000 each and I just need help with a bike, I have everything else budgeted out. I have searched the forums but there are so many and I just wanted to see if anyone had a solid suggestion for me.

I found my Long Haul Trucker lightly used on craigslist for $800 bucks.

I'd say keep on eye on craigslists around your area and try to find a tourable bike that fits you.

If I were you, I'd start by taking the whole Katy Trail to get you most of the way across Missouri. I rode half of it last summer and it's nice to have nice flat, shaded, traffic free riding with some good scenery.

There are many solid touring bikes. You can often find them on Ebay or Craigslist. Don't expect to save a huge amount, but you should be able to get something for less than new. There are countless threads here which list different models.

All bikes can be broken down, boxed up, and sent via planes, trains, or buses. As I recall, the last time I did mine, the only tools I needed were my multi-tool and a wrench for the pedals.
