cyclocross tires for touring
Has anyone noticed any durability issues using cyclocross tires on tours? I do a fair amount of riding off road (nothing technical, fire roads, muddy paths, etc, use the mtn bike for that) and know that cyclocross tires are generally built for racing, so may not have the long term durability needed, but I really am not that familiar with cross tires. Anybody have any issues using them?

I use Kenda Kwick's on my 'cross-ish bike but ride it on pavement, etc. Not a racing tire. Seems pretty stout and the rolloing resistance is not bad, but it's not a road tire. May be a fair compromise.

get some schwalbe marathon expedition tires. roll ok on pavement, very, very tough. and they fold so you can carry a spare

schwalbe tyres
Hi there,
Have heard about these new tyres from schwalbe, they are called marathon plus tour and they were supposedly due out at the end of Dec. These are supposed to be the bees knees of tyres.

Cyclocross tires are typically designed with softer compund rubber for off road traction. Pavement is hard on them and they will wear quickly. Additionally, the knobbys make for an uncomfortable ride and reduced traction on hard surfaces. Schwalbe, Conti, etc. touring tires are fine for rail trails, comfortable, long lasting and flat resistant.

I've heard people like using the Specialized Borough CX tires. I have some in 700x32's and they look like they'd be good. Slick in the center and knobbies on the side. I tried them and they seemed very, very slow.

Traction's tolerable, but +1 on jjones statement on the ride. I had a set of 38mm WTB Interwolfs, rode ok, but the vibration from the tread design was annoying after about an hour

In a recent thread over at roadbikereview forum, many people recommended the Ritchey Speedmax as a tire that performs well on both road and dirt. I ride my wtb crosswolfs on the road to get to the trails and it doesn't bother me much, but i recently purchased a set of 28mm panaracers to use when i know i'll be mostly on the road.

I did a few 3-4 day tours on mixed road and trail with X tires and loved it. Sure they do get worn fairly fast down the center strip, but without it I wouldn't have been able to cruise the trails to get to my destinations. If for a longer trip, the above recommendations seem to make sense as long as the trail isn't too hardcore.
