ACA Atlantic Coast start date suggestions

I'm planning my 2009 bike tour, and am thinking of doing 1/2 the ACA Atlantic Coast route from Bar Harbor, ME to my abode in the Philly suburbs with a side trip to see relatives in Northern New Hampshire. I'd prefer to do it in cooler weather and am not particularly upset by rain. However I'm thinking that mid April might still be too chilly for Northern New England. I do plan on mixing up camping (glutton for punishment I guess) with cheap motels. I'm also concerned about black flies - isn't May-June prime season for them and wouldn't that upset my camping plans if I change my date to May?

Well, certainly June is black fly season in the mountains of the northeast. But, along the coast, it's much earlier. I'd think that mid May would be about the earliest that I'd consider biking in Maine, even along the coast.

Another consideration: Services are very limited in Bar Harbor until after Memorial Day.
