Handlebar bag question + new LHT build pics

Just finished building my bike, except for the rear rack, which i haven't decided on yet (leaning towards the old man mountian red rock).

My question is: I've heard that there's some mounting problems with certain handlebar bags. I'm tempted to get the Ortlieb Ultimate5 (medium size probably), but it's pretty expensive so i might get the Lone Peak H-075 "Mt. Baldy". Should i expect to run into any problems using either of these handlebar bags on my handlebars? (i can take more pics if those ones don't show what's important). The bars are 25.4 mm ones that i took off my old bike.

Thanks

Custom painted by Eddie Carr. j/k

I painted it myself, it's just cheap spray paint and injket printer decals for the graphics, so it probably won't hold up as the years go by. Or it'll start looking more authentic

Wait, so that's an LHT frame?

I, I, I think I kind of love it! But, what on earth ever gave you the idea to paint it that way?

Wow, that's HAWT! That paint is insanely cool, good job!

What's up with that stem & the ?brake hanger? instead of a spacer? It would be a lot nicer looking with a more horizontal stem and fewer spacers, IMO.

Now, on to your actual question:
The only real mounting issue I could foresee would be the bag interfering with the shifter cables - maybe someone else who has STI could chime in, but it might be a matter of measuring the distance 'out' from your handlebar to the cables, and looking at specs for the bag to make sure it will fit (don't forget to factor in the length of the bracket as well as the bag). You will very likely have to peel back some tape to give more space around the end of the stem for the mounting bracket, but that shouldn't be a problem. You'll probably have to tweak the brake cable placement a little too.

It's a "Selle Italia" that my brother gave me. It's really old (that's electrical tape on the front ). I'm considering getting a new one, but my cheap-assness is currently winning.

But, what on earth ever gave you the idea to paint it that way?
I was brainstorming halloween costumes *i think*. Not sure because i've always wanted a JP jeep like in the movies. My plan was to get it built before haloween 2008 and ride it around in a safari outfit and a pith helmet and a gun on my back, but that didn't happen. Maybe next year.

What's up with that stem & the ?brake hanger? instead of a spacer? It would be a lot nicer looking with a more horizontal stem and fewer spacers, IMO.
Haha, i was waiting for someone to ask that. I ordered the wrong sized spacer, and had that hanger lying around . And with the stem, i did my best guess to fit my old bike just by guessing at measurements. I sort of do like my handlebars closer and lower, instead of higher and farther. There's a good chance i'm goign to replace the whole stem/spacers once i actually get to ride it, which won't be for atleast a month.

Now, on to your actual question:
Ahhh, thanks.

Mounting a handlebar bag with STI has been addressed recently here

I'd check on the gap at the stem / handlebar. I don't think it should be that big. With the stem upside down, check your front brake cable frequently for wear.

The front fender wants to be closer to the tire at the rear. At the least, it should be an even gap all the way around. You'll find out why with the first rock / stick you suck up. Not as dangerous, but the rear wants to be the same way.

Hard to tell, but is the chain long enough? It looks like it is in a small/small combo and there doesn't seem to be a lot of wrap. Might stress the R.D. in a big / bigger combo.

Neat Rear View mirrors!

Arkel has a chart on their website showing bar width and bag size compatibility with and without adaptors

I can't answer your question, but your bike is awesome. I'm told if you use a few coats of clearcoat over decals/stickers, they'll last a lot longer. You might consider that (if you haven't already).

yeah, that's an SKS kickstand, but it came black, except for the trapezoid shaped mounting piece, that was silver (which i didn't paint).

That's a compliment

JP is a classic. I love the score as well. Would probably be great to listen to on a ride.

Saki, that's an awesome bike! Good question, but there's no quick fix for this. STI shifters are troublesome in that they rout the cables inwards. (Perhaps a major ereason why bar-end shifters are popular with tourers?)

A common strategy seems to be to re-rout the cables downward. I ordered some wider handlebars to deal with the same issue, they'll be in next week. (I have an Ortlieb Ultimate in Medium I'm hoping to install.)

There are several threads about this floating around.

A Rixen and kaul style Klickfix would easily fit on that space, they use two plastic clamps but the weight is bourne by a plastic-coated steel cable that wraps under your stem. You may need to shorten and re-route your cables to avoid tangles. I see why you have a long front cable, to avoid a sharp bend to the hanger. the solution is a deeper hanger.
I think there is a potential source of danger in having a sticky-uppy steerer with no bars to spread the load should you take a tumble forward. My steerer is about 1.5" proud of the stem and Im getting a little nervous.

That's a fantastic paint job! I've always wanted that jeep too. And, in my opinion, it looks way better than any of the stock Surly colors.

Nice paint/decal job!

I suggest either a spray paint clear coat, or give clear packaging tape a try to save your decals.

One of the clear coat manufacturers (?rustoleum perhaps?) has a reflective version (spray has glass beads or something), although I haven't used it, it has peaked my intrest.

Give a look at various clear packaging tape manufacturers spec's if you go that route. I've used clear tape to save/protect paint/decals and some has failed miserably due to UV light/weather, while some has held up just like new. I'm thinking 3M brand tape worked very well, but can't confirm.
