Asus Eee PC 1000HE Netbook for Touring?
Does anyone use the Asus Eee PC 1000HE for touring? I'm still researching which netbook to get to carry while touring, and bike camping, or just riding around town. Mostly I'll be using a netbook for journaling, uploading pictures of my travels, e-mail, surfing.

I just read the specs on the Asus Eee PC and it has a regular HD. I was hoping to find something with a solid state HD instead. Seems like that would hold up better to all the bouncing around while riding.

I had a chance to play with the new Sony P serie, it's really nice and light. It's more expensive than the ASUS, but it might be a great option for touring.

I also have been considering the new Asus Eee 1000HE.
My conclusion so far is that the battery is most important. And it should have Wifi.
The disc is not important i think, they are very solid today especially on some of this machines.
Some years ago we used old machines while navigating sail boats, even this machines stood the test by falling on the floor from the navigation desk plenty of times.

We have the 1000H. So far it's 4 months into its test (ie. every day on the bike and used every day) and so far so good. Like the keyboard size and screen size, battery life is as advertised (ie. good). What else do you want to know?

A couple words on the Asus 901 Eee PC (SSH). I recently picked one up and have been very happy with it. It has a 6 cell battery in it and the specs said up to 7 hours of use. In reality it's 4.5. I'll give a quick testimony on the toughness. The other day, I had in my pannier: a u-lock, a book (What is the What) and my Asus (in that order with the lock closes to the bike.). I was locking the front door behind me and the next thing I heard was the dreaded cash of my Cross Check falling over on concrete. Everything fell on the computer, nothing happened to it. I doubt my MacBook would survive the same text. And no, I'm not going to test my theory.

I am crossing Canada this summer and have just picked up an Acer Aspire One. I am not 100% sure I want to pack the extra weight but I am playing with it now anyway. I want it for email, web, Crazy Guy journal entries, and uploading photos. That is really all these little netbooks are meant for. The Apire comes in two versions, mine being the one with an 8gb solid state hard drive and an 8gb SD card. The battery life looks to be only 2.5 hours but that should be good enough as I will likely be around power often enough. It is cheap too, new it is 299CDN. I got mine used for 200.

I'm assuming your netbook has wireless? How is the connection while touring?

As far as i can see on the asus.com and the asus page for my country the Asus Eee PC 1000HE do not have wifi.
Is it impossible that it comes without wifi?
Means it useless in the many new areas that has free wifi.

FWIW I have been beating the crap out of laptops on a daily basis since 1998. I am on my second one. First one was a Compaq Pressario 1200, current one is a Dell D610. I did have to replace the hard drive on Compaq at some point when the controller went out, but I have had to do that on my desktop hard drive too. My computers are used daily in the field, cars, trucks, airplanes, airports, trains, train stations, etc, etc. They are not babied. I always carry them in a padded sleeve and when traveling they go in a padded briefcase. I have bent key boards, cracked cases, worn out touch pads and have yet to destroy a hard drive. FWIW I do keep my drives backed up on a regular basis. Get what will work for you and carry on.

All netbooks come with wifi
My set up is an Asus 900 with eeebuntu OS, an iphone and a Canon A580 with a 4GB SD card and a 2GB USB memory stick. At night I'll journal and etc with the Asus, but I use the iPhone during the day. I store screen shots of my maps on both the iPhone and the Asus.
