vacuum packing

has anyone tried using those vacuum storage bags for packing thier stuff really tightly?

im talking about those plastic bags that you fill with your stuff, and then attach to a hoover to suck all of the air out. maybe they could be modded to work with a bike pump. i reckon this would save a fair bit of room when packing clothes.

First, I have no idea how you would modify this to work with a bike pump.
Second, I would think a compression sack would work almost as well without an hour of pumping.

I've used the plastic bags that you roll the air out. Pretty useful for the dirty stuff. But I used the small ones.

I've used the smaller ones as well. No vacuum, just roll them. Really good for keeping the clean and dirty seperated.

I just got back from a Tasmania tour where I used those bags and they are WONDERFUL!
Actually, the vacuum bags I used did NOT have to have a vacuum cleaner to suck the air out.

I had a couple sizes, small and meduim, and the kind I used had a large zip-lock type of top closer, then you rolled the bag up tight and there was a one-way valve system on the other end of the bag to let the air escape.
I used it for all of my clothes and I was able to pack everything including my bulky fleece into one pannier. The bags all stayed intact for the entire 6 weeks, kept the clothes dry and compressed.
I highly recommend them. You can get them at places like REI or the Container Store and they don't cost much.
I won't tour without them! They are much better than a compression stuff sack imho.
