Sierra Designs Baku 1 Tent
Does anyone have this tent? I am in Korea and the tent market here blows. Imports cost and arm and a leg but I was able to find this one and only tent that I think might be good for touring. I like lots of vestibules and I like that it seems very water proof because its part single wall. On the other hand there are a lot of very negative reviews about it building up a lot of condensation. I dont camp that THAT often in the rain but I know it would really piss me off if my tent was water proof but I still woke up to a wet sleeping bag! If no ones owns this tent can you give me some advice? Is there a retailer in Korea that sells good tents?
Thanks a lot!
Here is a link to some basic info.
I bought a Eureka Backcountry 1. It has a similar floor plan - long and narrow. The long part was great because I'm 6'4" and like to stretch out. Everything about the design seemed good for one person. However, when I tried it out I discovered it was so narrow I couldn't lie on my side and read. There was no room to hold the book out in front of me. That was a deal-breaker, because I read every night on tour. I often read in the afternoons when I want to lie down for awhile. I ended up buying a MicroLight 2 from L. L. Bean. It's a tad heavier and isn't free-standing, but has a lot more room and I can read.
I used the Baku 2 on a 4k mile tour, didn't like it because there was not enough air flow and therefore too much condensation. I thought the design was pretty neat, perhaps if Sierra had used a more breathable fabric for the single walled sides, like eVent, maybe it could've been a winner. Not long after I got back, I noticed that the tent had been discontinued.
I love single walls for Mountaineering. Not so much for touring.
