There have been some interesting posts to read in this thread. All of my friends think camping out is Motel 6. They have all been trained or are inclined to mall shopping, makeup and looking pretty. As for me, I like the outdoors. I have backpacked solo on many occasions due to a lack of willing friends. I enjoy riding my bike. I move my home frequently due to my need to travel. Most of the people I know think I am brave, but I NEED to travel. I have a difficult time staying in one place. I know I am an oddity, but I think many of the female soloist or parters are oddities as well to societies "norms" for females. I am thankful I am in the minority and among such accepting people in the bike forums.
PS. Machata - listening to noisy kids all day made me crave silence. I too wanted to be a teacher, but I realized that my mental makeup would not allow it.

I just got back from my first tour and was planning on going myself (I'm a woman) after I'd placed ads on both the Crazy guy companions list and also the ACA companions wanted list and didn't get any replies. Just about 3 weeks before my departure date, I got an email from a woman in New Jersey who had never done any self-supported touring but wanted to come along. And then about 5 days before the tour, another woman who had never done any touring either contacted me and wanted to come along so I ended up with two companions. During our tour of the Lake Champlain area on the Champlain bicycle route, we only passed one other bike tourer, a young guy from New York state. We passed lots and lots of bike club riders coming down from Quebec for a day ride, but no others with loaded rigs. In fact, hardly anyone seemed to be interested in our trip!! We did get the occasional "where are you coming from and where are you headed?" but that was usually from someone else (in an RV) at a campground. So after this experience, I'm very encouraged to put more trips together and post for companions b/c I know there are women out there who want to tour, but often, it seems, they haven't done it before and are looking for an on ramp so to speak. I would have gone for an ACA tour myself, because I like meeting lots of new people and it's fun to be in a large group, but the $100/day cost really put me off vs the <$25 I spent on my own tour.
