Pannier Rack for a Surly Pacer?

Pannier Rack for a Surly Pacer?
I just got a gorgeous Surly Pacer and I would like to put a rear pannier rack on it (for commuting and light touring). It has no braze-ons for a rear rack, so I am wondering what my options are. Any help or advice would be much appreciated

The current Pacer frame has the lower eyelets at the rear dropouts, but no braze-ons at the top of the seat stays. You can use these clamps: https://www.jandd.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FCLAMP to attach a rack, but the big challenge are the short chainstays on this frame. There is a good chance you will hit the heel of your foot on the panniers as you ride. Jannd's Expedition rack might help this, as you can slide your gear further back than on other racks. Also, Old Man Mountain racks might have a good solution foir getting your rack back further.

Great bike, but pretty short chain stays for great heal clearance. This suggestion might be more than you want to spend but..... Tubus Logo, designed for greater clearance, also an amazing rack. You can use p clamps on the seat stays as mentioned above. If you need greater heal clearance, you can also get the Tubus quick release adaptor. This will push the rack even further back.

Old Man Mountain also makes amazing racks. They have many fit options as well.
Basically you have one braze-on for the bottom of the rack. You can use just about any basic rack and just use p clams on the seat stays, its just that the better racks/brands will have better fit solutions to deal with the short chain stays. I had a $30 Topeak rack on a 1988 Schwinn Paramount (total race bike with very short chain stays) The rack was 100% mounted with p clams, no braze ons at all. The rack fit. I was just limited to rather small panniers because of heal clearance.

I use an older version of the Tubus Fly on my Pacer:
It attaches to the brake bridge using the brake bolt.
Great rack that will carry as much as you would want to on a Pacer.

I was just looking into this myself. Axiom has a rack that sweeps back to compensate for the shorter chainstays on a road bike's geometry. It's a lot cheaper than the old man mountain, and offers a more durable solution vs. the p-clips.
