CDN GDR Surly Pugsley Assault!
We just got back from a ride of the CDN GDR. We traveled south to north trying a new proposed southern GDR route that is not yet approved, but looks like it will become the new standard route.
We rode our Surly Pugsley fat tire bikes running 4" Endomorph tires. They turned out to be perfect for this ride and talking to other GDR riders our overall speed was not much different than folks riding FS or hardtail bikes. These bikes only had 8 speed Shimano Alfine IGHs on them, but the gearing was excellent and we were able to ride all, but the steepest terrain where walking as fast or faster than riding in most cases.
I can highly recommend the CDN GDR as a dirt touring route. Remote, beautiful and challenging enough without being a ridiculous suffer-fest. I have never ridden the current southern section of the CDN GDR through Fernie and Elko, but I have driven through the area. I think the new proposed route is superior if you have to choose. Although my buddy Kurt and I were chatting and we think next time we'd ride south from Banff, down the standard CDN GDR route to Montana and then come back up to Sparwood BC on the new proposed CDN GDR route...we're calling this option the CDN GDR Plus!
My Pugsley keeps impressing the heck out of me as a versatile bike that just eats everything up and is more fun than you can imagine. From snow to sand to expedition touring to technical mountain biking it is the swiss army knife of bikes.
I've posted photos on Flickr here. I'm uber busy at the moment getting ready for another trip, but I'll get something written up and post links here when I'm done.

Nice Vik. You're a trailblazer. Every Big Dummy Google search I do ends up with about 408 listings for your page.

Thanks for posting.Dwnptrl_77 must be on his way to camp. Hope it's a good one.
I just finished packing up for a Dummy roll on the Maine seacoast tomorrow.
4-5 days to see what happens.
I found the BD on these forums and now the Pug is on my wishlist. yeehoo!
