Touring on the Gulf Coast (FL, AL, MS, LA)

Hi y'all,

Does anyone have experience touring on the Gulf Coast of FL, AL, MS, and LA that you'd like to share. I'm especially interested in riding between Mobile and Panama City, but New Orleans, Pascagoula, and Tallahassee are on my list of possibilities as well.

I'm very interested in routes right now; how you divided the trip into days, any particular scenic routes to hit along the way, areas to avoid, etc.

Thanks
Dell

Check out Adventure Cycling's Southern Tier. You can buy the maps in pieces... so you could get it from Florida to Louisiana.

Yes. I've looked at the Souther Tier route but, except for Alabama to Pensacola, it goes through the interior. There are beautiful roads hugging the coast from Fort Morgan, AL all the way down to Panama City, FL.

Friend and I had fun last fall running from St. Martinsville, La to St. Augustine, self supported. You might find something useful in my journal. The last page list a bunch of potential overnight spots.

Cyclebum,

Thanks for sharing that. I've browsed your journal and I will go back and study your route in detail. That looks like a great tour. Did you complete your West Coast to Little Rock tour?

Try searching the journals on Crazy Guy on a Bike. Lots of detailed entries on traffic, roads, etc etc. I think you will find it informative.
