Bize size question
Is a 56cm Surly LHT too big for a 5'8" person? I am looking to buy used so I haven't had too much luck finding a 54 cm, which would be a better fit. Would this be too uncomfortable for long tours? Could it be fitted to my size? I am used to riding larger bikes. My last road bike that I sold was 58cm, which I put about 200 miles on with little problem (some lower back pain) from being stretched out. Also, would $550 be a good deal for a used 2008 LHT? Thanks for your help.

I bought a 56cm langster, and it's too big for me, the truckers run big by one size, if I were to buy one (and I'm 5'8") I would buy a 52. That 56 would be a good deal, but it's not worth it being 2 sizes up.

I am 5'7" and ride a 52cm LHT. I would think 56cm would be too big for you. What does the $550 include? Is it the stock components from the Complete? If so, it seems like a nice low price if it's in good condition.

My 3 bikes are within maybe 40mm of each other in effective top tube length but there is definitely more slop than that in what would make a suitable frame size, I could imagine up to 100mm wouldn't be that big a deal, give or take stem and maybe seatpost adjustments.
ps-> I am also ~5'8" and ride a 54cm lht

I'm 5'9" and ride a 54cm LHT. That size fits me fine. I test rode a 56cm one briefly and could fit it, but I think the 54cm one is just about right. I think google groups has a LHT sizing comparison spreadsheet, but people are all over the map when I looked at it last.
That said I think the 56cm is a good deal, but I think it's just to big for you. Though do what HardyWeinberg said a compare the Effective TT length. I also believe Surly suggests a size smaller than your regular roadbike when sizing the LHT.
