trip report: chicago to minneapolis
just got back from 6 day chicago to minneapolis; was a beautiful ride if a little annoying because of headwinds in SE wisconsin. particular highlights is the entire 4 trail from reedsburg to marshland (and then highway 35 north, which was stunning and had been recently repaved) and the area around stoughton. had planned on stopping in madison but i'm sick of our country's dependence on interstates, and its virtually impossible to easily slide in and out of big cities. i was on my surly crosscheck, original surly gearing...
it was also tragic, imho, to see how obese and car-dependent everyone has gotten; it has completely shifted thinking from how it was when i was a child here. people think in terms of a) chain stores and b) parking lots. you ask for a locally-owned diner, and they point you to some big chain restaurant "two parking lots down." everyone was tremendously nice, but their car-dependence was a big sadness for me. still, beautiful country... some pictures below
one more picture, because it was a BEAUTIFUL display of the half-assed, cynical approach to bike lanes i found in most small towns:
