Shipping a bike to the U.S.

For an up coming tour I am shipping my bike from Canada to the U.S. by Fedex Will I have any problems with U.S. Customs? Since I live close to the border an option is to ship from a U.S. bike shop.
Canadian Customs advised me to return my bike to an U.S. bike after the tour as Fedex is obliged to charge me duty if I send it to Canada. I've sent bike clothing back at times during a previous U.S. tour and my wife has ended up paying duty Anyone have any experience with this
