Chicago to Michigan Route
Hi all. I need to ride to Michigan from Chicago. From my Chicago Bike Map it appears continuing down Route 41 followed by the Burnham Greenway after the lakefront path ends is reasonable until reaching Hammond, In. Does anyone know of a safe route from Hammond to points further east or should I continue south while in Illinois before heading east and avoid Hammond/Gary? Thanks.

Here is a route my wife and I use from the far south 'burbs to Chesterton, IN and the Indiana Dunes, ending just a few miles short of Michigan City, IN. It goes about 5 to 10 miles south of the lake, but is pleasant, traffic free, and avoids a lot of riding thru industrial areas.

From the end, you can pick US Rte 12, US Rte 20, or the local lakeshore roads and you're on into Michigan.
The connection from the Burnham Greenway is thru Lansing, connecting with my route at mile 10.7 ... at the end of the Lansing Bikeway at Wentworth and Terrace.

This site guides you to the route suggested by Recycle:

The idea is Burnham Greenway -> some streets in Hammond -> Erie-Lackawanna Trail -> Recycle's route.

Thanks Recycle. I'd forgotten about Bikely.com & Dunewood Campground should make a great end point for the day.
