Cycommutes "Post your creepy crawly pictures here"

Everybody has pictures of cute fuzzy little mammals. Some are human (and not so cute) and others are bunnies or dogs or cows or burros or etc. Let's see your bicycle related pictures of reptiles! Snakes, turtles, lizards, crocodiles, bugs, etc. If it has scales and is cold-blooded or creeps along the ground, post your pictures of it.

As before, I'll start

A Missouri box turtle on the Katy Trail

A red milk snake on the Katy Trail

A big blue snake (black rat snake) on the Katy with a story

Dappled sunlight filters through the green canopy that makes up the tunnel of leaves of the Katy. The ground is a constantly changing kaleidoscope of light and shadow. We spun along the trail, enjoying the interplay of light and the coolness of the shadow. Leaves and branches litter the trail but are seldom of any size that would cause a cyclist problems. Occasionally a branch of large size lays on the trail but those are easy to dodge and make the flat ride more interesting. All I really need to do is call out the hazard to my wife tucked in to my draft so that she doesn't run into...

Snake! Big Snake! Holy Cow! Huge Snake! I've got the get a picture of it! Latch up the brakes and stop...

Let's take a moment and examine the situation. The key here, kids, is communication...complete communication. In the above example, I properly communicated part of the message - Snake! Unfortunately, I failed to communicate the rest of the message - stopping.

...Bam!...

That 'Bam!' would be my wife. The first thing you do when someone in front of you yells snake and swerves to the left is to follow them -to avoid said snake- and then look to see what the hubbub is about. "Wow. That's a big snake!", they might say to themselves. "I can see why he might not want to run over it." They probably won't think, "He's going to stop to take pictures." and, considering that they are being puled along by this 15 mph freight train in front of them and have passed the snake and are looking backwards to marvel at the long skinny creature laying on the ground, they might not notice that the freight train has stopped. Ergo, the Bam!

...Crash!...

The 'Crash!' needs no real explanation.

...followed by tears from the pain of gravel making several slices in her skin below the left knee.

Now a caring, loving husband would cradle his wife in his arms and console her. He'd offer to treat her wounds, wash them with his last gulp of water, pull out the first aid kit and bandage the bleeding...no matter how minimal.

But did I mention that there was a snake laying in the middle of the trail...a big snake...a big blue snake...a huge blue snake with a yellow belly that, at first glance, appeared to be 23 feet long? I mean it was a huge snake and I don't see huge snakes out on the dry and dusty Colorado plains...at least not that big. Nor does anyone that I know and how am I going to illustrate to anyone how awesomely huge this snake is unless I have something to show the size? "Get up! Get up! Before it crawls away!"

So she gets up, bushes the gravel and grit from her bleeding knee, gamely limps over to where the snake is laying in the middle of the path, poses behind it for effect and thinks to herself, "This man I have married, the father of my children, who has been married to me for 30+ years, and who I will stay married to for the next 30 years, will get his! When he is a tottering old fool barely able to move around with his walker, I'm going to trip him down the stairs and then stand over him and say "Get up. Before it crawls away."

The snake? I got the picture

Not technically a reptile but I only have one amphibian picture so here it is...a cricket frog.

A horned lizard hatchling on the north rim of the Grand Canyon

Tarantula in Southern Colorado

Hitchhiking grasshopper on Katy Trail (2003)

Jenny Jump State Forest is filled with daddy longlegs. This one loved our tent.

I saw this in a gas station off route 206 in Burlington County, NJ after a ride in the Pine Barrens.

I met this bad boy on the Katy as well. Note to self, always bring along a telephoto lens as a 50mm isn't likely the best choice in all cases.

Ooh! Must be a timbersnake. Our rattlesnakes have a nice diamond pattern on their backs. Your's just look like a tire

I don't have any rattlesnake pictures. It's tough to take pictures while hovering

You mean like this guy? These were all over France in 2007 because it was raining so much.

Not on a tour, but I've started a collection of photos of Australian spiders I've seen here. Most of these live, or were living, in our toilet block.

My own "Fun With Snakes" day.

Sorry...I didn't have time to take pics.
Please bear in mind that the path in question was 8ft wide and the snake was laying across almost the entire thing.
The wife refers to this as the BFS incident.

Is that a Blue Racer ?

Up here we only have three kinds of snakes... there are 3 types of garter snakes (I love seeing these on rides), rattlesnakes in the south, and hognose snakes in the southeast corner.

I think it's a black rat snake. Too big for a blue racer.

Not all creepy crawly, but none furry...

This little guy was shedding its skin by going over and under twigs of a beaver hut:

This one jumped in the water when I got too close:

Snapping turtle digging a nest in the trail:

Flies munching on squished bugs (at least those weren't munching on me):

Moth mimicking bird dropping:

Thanks Robow. All were made with a Nikon D80 except the snake in the water, where I used a film camera (F100). I carry a 70-300VR for wildlife.

Back from the dead, You just can't keep a good thread down

Yikes ! and yet another bad boy I almost ran over just a couple days ago on this last tour in southern IL. Easily the largest Copperhead I've run into at over 3 feet long and would pack a really mean wallop.

Alligators bask along the edge of Loop Road in Everglades National Park, which is coincidentally the smoothest part of the road. We frequently spotted them from about 3 feet away and they mostly ignored us, but occasionally they'd flip out and make for the swamp in spectacularly explosive fashion. Nothing gets the pulse racing like a 300 pound lizard suddenly going berserk an arm's length away.

These were tiny ones:

Banded water snakes are non-poisonous, but have a nasty disposition.

A red-bellied turtle:

Another one with the optional sunroof:

Found this mudbug crossing the trail and gave her a lift to the water. Are crustaceans creepy crawly?

Rhinoceros beetle:
