D Ring on Ortieb Sport Packer front panniers?

Has anyone found a good use for the D Rings above the compression straps on the last generation Sport Packer front panniers?

I've spent a lot of time looking at these while on tour and figure there must be a reason they are there...

Thinking about this, you could lash or tie something to the top of the pannier, going from the rack bar in the inside to the D-ring on the outside, you could also use it to tie something bulky to the top of the rack, going from the rings on one side to the rings on the other side. When panniers are on, sometimes reaching under to tie to the rack bars is tricky, so you could use the rings instead.

funny I was wondering the same only this week... only thing I could think of was a shoulder strap for use off the bike. It works just about.
