Critique my route:
I want to leave from Guntersville, Alabama... do a lot of the Natchez Trace and cross the border into Mexico at Presidio (most direct route to Copper Canyon I think). Anyone with any experience with Lousiana or Texas especially... I'd really appreciate it. I think I should probably reroute it to go above Austin and San Antonio (more direct). Anyway, I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thanks!

Your Texas/Louisiana route majorly follows the ACA 'Southern Tier'. Not a lot to worry about there. I'd hop on 90 as soon as you can, as it's a sure and straight shot to Marfa (where you can go south to Presidio). You'll meet a lot of friendly faces accustomed to bicycle tourist in that area (many that cater towards that). I'd say where you want to route should be determined by the type of tour you wish to take. If you're wanting free camping rather than taking people up for warmshowers/couchsurfing, I'd say your route doesn't matter a whole lot. Stick to something close to the ACA and you'll find lots of open arms (and doors). Guil Jones in Marathon is one of the most accomodating and friendly guys on that whole route, imo. Definitely make a stop when you pass through there.

I'll tell you that it's a hell of a lot straighter than the 42 Below route which passed almost through your starting and ending towns but also detoured through Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio with a side trip to Memphis. It's a good thing they gave us vodka.
