    Surly Nut here

    Okay so I currently have a Surly LHT, a Surly Pacer (Road Bike) and a couple of racing bikes. My LHT is my go anywhere bike, but for touring fairly light, by which I mean I rarely use front panniers unless I am going into serious backwoods or remote places, it seems a little like overkill, just a bit too sturdy,. too heavy, too rugged. I love it, but was wondering what other's experiences might be on something like a cross check with a rear rack. I have heard a lot of good things about the cross check, and know a few guys who race them for cross, but wanted to know how they have faired for light touring.

    Plenty of people have toured ridiculously long distances on...pretty much everything, really. Cyclocrosses such as the crosscheck and specialized tricross hold up very well. I use the latter, and it's hard to think of any specific way in which it's not as good as a purpose built touring bike. Probably long term durability/fixability would be the weak spot: STI shifters are a bigger point of failure than bar end shifters, carbon forks can't be repaired by some dude with a welder in a yurt in mongolia, etc etc. For light-medium shortish distance touring, it's the bomb.

    I've owned both an LHT and a Crosscheck. The Crosscheck makes a pretty good touring bike. It isn't as stable as the LHT and the LHT handles better fully loaded, but the Crosscheck works fine. But if you are touring light, why not just throw a rack on the back of the Pacer? The Crosscheck is so similar to the LHT that it seems pretty redundant.

    THe Cross Check works well as a touring bike, but I also think your Pacer would work fine. Why not just add a big saddlebag and a handlebar bag from Rivendel or Velo-Orange?

    +1 for light touring on the pacer.

    The trucker is designed such as to be loaded front and rear with 80 lbs of gear. However I think it has more going for it than just being overbuilt. In my opinion, it absorbs road vibrations better than any other bike I've ever ridden, and I like that the steering isn't twitchy. I tour with just a rear rack, but I just like riding the LHT for long periods, so the extra weight is neglegable.

    That being said, I have no idea how the Pacer rides But if it rides like the LHT, sounds like an excellent option.

    I've got a cross check and LHT. I did some grocery shopping with the CC with full rear panneirs and it rode nicer than I expected. It definately fits the category of "if I could only have one bike for everything" . If I was in your place with a jones for another bike I'd look at a Specialized Tricross. The CC is like the LHT, it's a piece of iron. The TriCross is a lot lighter and damped feeling over bumps. If you're truly thinking of light touring go ahead and start with a light bike that can take fat tires.
