Velo-Orange elkhide covers?

Hi guys,

Just got these delivered and with a search, I found that some people
feel it stretches a bit thin so would prefer to use gel below it? I
was thinking of wrapping it over the existing bar tape. Bad idea?

Also I found a complaint that it tends to loosen up. Would this be
less if it is over the existing tape?

Thanks.

I have sewn the elk hide over gel pads both on top of the bars and on the drops. The sewing itself is a little tedious until you get the hang of it, but the combination of the hide and the gel is very comfortable. The hide stretches around the bar and the gel nicely, and it can be pulled snug. With occasional neats foot or proofhide, it holds up well to rain, and hasn't loosened for me in over a year. sewing over tape would probably give the same effect as over gel. If done right, there is enough left over to sew over the chain stay as a protector.
