Highway 1 by Big Sur Update
Last week Caltrans announced that Highway 1 north of Ragged Point would be closed for up to three weeks. Today an article in the local paper says they've announced that the closures will be limited. The road will be open between 8 am and 5 pm, and then close for the evening. This is about nine miles north of Ragged Point and three miles south of Gorda.
"Caltrans suggest that, before driving the coast, motorists call a new hotline to check traffic information on Big Sur from Cambria to Carmel. The toll-free number is 888-836-0866.
"Road information is also available online at www.dot.ca.gov/dist05/road_information.htm."

I've ridden this section of road several times and it is a bit of a moonscape with the scars of previous landslides visible both on the hillsides and the road. It isn't a place I'd want to be during a bad storm wondering if the hillside was about to sweep me into the sea!
