Non touring uses for a BOB Trailer
I'm thinking about getting into touring and am really leaning towards a trailer vs panniers. Before investing in a touring bike I thought I would just use my Hybrid with a BOB Trailer. I'm just curious if the BOB is practical to use for other things like running errands, hauling groceries,trips to the hardware store, ect. Do any of you BOB owners get any use out of your trailers for things other than touring?

before mine died (it was sorta old, used, and abused), i would get groceries and such with it. i could load 24 bottles of 2 buck chuck in it at trader joe's, while heaping scorn and smug self-satisfaction on all the motorists. smug alert in o-side...

For what you intend... I would suggest something like a Burley Nomad 2 wheel trailer. I've had both the Nomad and Bob and prefer the Nomad for hauling and stabiity.
For touring..... I might prefer the Bob... then again I don't like either for touring.

Absolutely! Your plan is pretty much what mine was (just get a trailer to hook behind the bike I already had and see how I liked touring) and I`m happy with both theplan and the trailer. As it happens, mine is a BOB, but I think Kyakdiver is right about the two wheeler suggestion. I`ve never used a two wheeled bike trailer, but I think they`d be a lot easier to load groceries in. If you plan on single track or dirt touring, probably best to ignore that last part and go with a single wheeler, which also does a good (if not perfect) job around town.

I've used the BOB for hauling bags of fertilizer, groceries, beer, potted plants, an 8 foot apple tree for the garden, my mountain bike, construction supplies, hand tools... pretty much anything that I can wedge into the basket or strap to the frame.
I have to admit a two wheeled trailer would be easier to use but I don't have room for another trailer in my garage.
Oh, I've also toured with it as well.

I moved with mine (boxes at least.) I use a child's trailer for groceries though, since it holds more and can carry more weight (family of four.) If I planned for a more utilitarian use for mine, I'd of gotten a two wheeled trailer.

There has been a lot of discussion of panniers vs. trailers on this forum. I've tried both and my preference is panniers, though not overwhelmingly so. I'd still tour with my Bob if I had a reason. If it's easier to mount a Bob than panniers, they're fine.
I now use mine with my old Stumpjumper for grocery shopping. I live about a mile from the grocery store. I can get four shopping bags in my Bob.

I use my Bob and panniers when hauling large bulky items from Costco, Home Depot and the local nursery.

I've found that I am sometimes mistaken for a homeless person if I use the BOB. Just before Christmas I was given directions to a shelter by a kindly older gentleman while I was loading up groceries. It might be time for an image make over.
