i've read of spying cyclotourists spying, but don't know if it was a factual accounting or a fictional novel by Ken Follett or someone - i seem to recall in Follett's novel, the Needle using a bike as cover in his spying in Great Britain. Wasn't it portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the movie as well?
Anyway...
very interesting look back at the strategic use of bicycles.

The Maryland State Police surveillance of advocacy groups was far more extensive than previously acknowledged, with records showing that troopers monitored -- and labeled as terrorists -- activists devoted to such wide-ranging causes as promoting human rights and establishing bike lanes.

One wonders how much sensitive intelligence could be gathered by a bunch of boys in Lederhosen going around saying "Ve come von Chermany!" and complaining about English beer, but I guess you can't blame 'em for trying, right?

During WW2 Bartali rode around "training". The Germans wouldn't stop him because he was so popular. He was actually delivering fake identity documents he had hidden in his bike. Coppi was a prisoner of war for awhile. They were tough guys.
