Gagets on a tour
 

I have a garmin 605 for millage, speed, streets, etc. That is really the only
thing I have. I have been following a lot of tours lately and others seem
to have ways of listing to news, reading newspapers etc. Me, I think I
would just want somthing to listen to music and perhaps weather info.
I would also carry a cell phone just in case.

What do you carry and what does it do?

Lenovo x200s - i am a software developer and work from the road, we also journal every day
HP Mini 5101 - my wife is a writer, we also journal every day
Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx - self explanatory
Nikon D700 - self explanatory
Power Gorilla - supplemental electricty
BGAN Explorer 110 - sat internet for eastern europe/siberia/mongolia etc (for work)
LaCrosse BC-700 - nimh charger
Nokia 6100 - cell phone
iPod Nano - music
Seagate FreeAgent - portable harddrive for photo backup etc
Zoom H4n - field recorder
Spot Satellite Messenger - lets family know where we are nightly, automatically updates our website map

The iPhone is my favourite gadget. Here are some uses:

• telephone
• gps (w/ maps)
• trackmytour (friends can follow along)
• music (iPod or internet radio app)
• podcasts
• e-mail & SMS
• blogging (wordpress app)
• Skype (when I have WiFi access)
• cheap camera (not a replacement for a better digital camera)
• news reader
• ebooks
• weather forecasts
• address book (for postcards)
• language translator

Not bad for 177g. The downside is the battery life, but there are ways to deal with that. I also have a Garmin Legend Cx mounted on the handlebars to record my tour and to later geotag my photos.

Kazer: I've thought about taking my work with me on the road. How does that work for you? How do you split your days between travel and work?

I carry my Sanza "fuze" with MP3 & radio for news & weather. Can also put the family's pictures on it.
Small and lightweight. I carry the a/c charger for when i'm stopping somewhere with elec.

1 Nikon D70s / 12-24mm, 24-120mm, 70-200mm lenses, 2 spare batteries and battery charger. These go in a pelican case on the back of my bike.
1 eeePC w/ac adapter
2 iPod nanos + 1 cable
2 Blackberrys

I get extra space savings from the fact that the nanos and blackberrys can charge off the computer while it is plugged in. The same wall plug that goes into the eeepc brick also goes into the camera's battery charger brick.

I like to listen to NPR in the mornings sometimes.

i do bring a couple of mini cameras, (now) a cell phone and a radio. I would go with an Airbook and a hardened 1TB storage brick or something like that if i were to go out for a yearlong meander.

Boy, and the cellphone i had back in the nascent days of cellphones, sheesh! it was the size of a couple of bricks. i didnt bring THAT touring!

i don't want to hijack the thread, but so far things are great. any rest or sightseeing days we take are also work days. if anything major comes up where i need to stop specifically for work, it isn't a big deal (we're on a multi-year trip and the productive down time is usually welcome).

Camera, cell phone, MP3 player. I might get an ebook reader once the prices come down and the technology becomes settled.

i always thought this bike touring was a poor man's hobby .

Having spent all my money on the gadgets, the only way I can travel is by unsupported bike tour :)

Nokia N800 (7 ounce internet tablet) - to do journal updates

I would replace the N800 by using a web enabled phone, but the monthly charges are more than I am willing to pay.

Other additions will have to replace something heavier, so netbooks are out. I might consider a Kindle at some point, but have a hard time justifying it when I can carry a bunch of audiobooks in my tiny iPod Shuffle (at less than 2 ounces).

Depending on where I was going I might consider a GPS, but so far have not felt the need. I sent it home from the Trans America after a few days, and didn't miss it on the Santa Fe Trail.

I'm in the process of simplifying what I bring along.

• Voice recorder - I used to bring this along for dictating a journal, but paper and pencil works just as well for me, and It's harder to refer to audio files than to words on a page.
• iPod - I'm phasing out bringing this along. Books don't need to be charged.

I'm thinking about bringing a netbook on tours where I'd have wifi. I can get a little work done on the road, and use it to stay in touch with people. However, it's just one more thing to worry about charging - and the charger for our Asus is heavy!
