    From the frame up..suggestions?

Hey everybody. I've been hunting through the threads trying to find suggestions for the ideal touring component set up and just haven't come across anything too solid.

I've got a custom steel lugged frame with columbus slx tubing being built by a new framebuilder in town, Armando Quiros, remember that name, he's good, and I told him to hook it up to be a cross between road and touring. So, at the moment it's getting filleted and I've got absolutely nothing planned for it, except the paint haha.

I plan on doing the 60/40 method of rack packing with panniers, so, for that I have learned 36 hole hubs are important. Also, just about everywhere I did read I heard mention of using mountain components (mainly XT LX or SLX). Why no love for road components? I'm guessing it's the gearing and cassette range, but can't that be adjusted?

I want this bike to be with me for the rest my life and I plan on going across plenty of countries on it. So, at that, if this were your bike, and you could build it yourself with a modest budget, what would you put on it?

    Thanks in advance!

ps-there aren't any disc or canti mounts, but i could get a rigid fork for that i guess. and i'm almost 100% sure i'll get a brooks b-17

Square taper bottom bracket with a polished 110/74 BCD triple crankset (26/36/46 sounds nice), steel inner rings, 9 speed cassette (12 or 13-34 from Harris) with an XT mtb derailleur, indexing bar-con shifters on a flared randonneur style bar with leather bar tape sprouting from a Chris King headset, thompson seatpost sporting a brooks saddle and matching saddlebag, 24mm wide Velocity Dyad rims laced 32 / 3x to Chris King or Phil Wood hubs, handbuilt and tensioned for your estimated total weight and tied and soldered if you have a wheelbuilder who knows how to do this well, possibly a dyno hub in front to power your lights, and don't forget the tubular steel racks and ortlieb panniers, and maybe some nice 35mm touring tires from Vittoria or Schwalbe to get you rolling down the road.

Okay... that's what I would do. A little bit of the old school, a little of the new. Of course, this assumes that money really isn't a concern, and you are getting to build your dream bike.

edit: just read "modest budget"... I guess I got carried away... in that case, I would compromise on everything except the drivetrain and the wheels.

well thank you, truly, it's like you just described a bouquet of flowers, beautiful.
the brand names were a big help (that's what i was going for with my request), so to see the actual preferred set-up in detail is great!
i'm going to be working part-time hopefully with a local shop so i might be able to get most of the stuff at cost..could be a do-able build.
