    Erie Canal Buffalo NY-Albany NY

Just wondering what the camping situation is like along the way. Is it safe to do some stealth camping? Any one with any experience let me know.

There is camping at any of the lift bridges along the way, as well as numerous campgrounds and marinas. The guide I used I purchased from

http://www.nyscanals.gov/exvac/trail/campsites.html has the official NY towpath campsites. In addition to that, many of the towns along the way have free ( but limited ) camping facilities, usually at their town marinas. Middleport and Holley, for example.

Outside of the major cities like Rochester/Syracuse/etc, the path is primarily rural, so it's trivial to find someplace to stealth camp.

I had no issues at all in 08. We pretty much set up where ever it struck our fancy.

If you are going to do it, let me know. I've been looking for partners to go on short trips like this. I finally got all the proper equipment to tour and want to give it a shot. you can just send me a message through the site or reply here.

For the most part camping is easy along the trail. The Canal Corporation (A division of the NYS Thruway Authority) owns and runs much of the trail. Camping is alowed anywhere next to the trail in those sections, plus there are great campsites that are free in plenty of locations. You can ask any of the lock keepers for permission to camp at any of the lock. I have never been turned down, but be sure to ask instead of assume.... The section from East Syracuse to Rome is owned by New York State Parks and this section is much less camping friendly. There is a paid camping location a few miles east of Syracuse, at Green Lakes State Park, but it is up a huge hill. There are a few places where you can stealth camp nearer to Canastota, but expect noisy train traffic.

Let me know if there is anything else you want to know
