First touring bike, the eternal LHT vs 520 question...but with a twist !

Hey guys,

This is my first post here so I hope I post in the right forum

I'm about to buy my first touring bike and I'm hesitating between:

1. Used 2007 Trek 520 (about 800$ CAN, no taxes bc it's a private sale)
2. New 2010 LHT bike, 1.5k+ CAN! (TY Jean!)

Sound like a very easy choice at these price tags...had it wrong in the original post.

Of course those are approx prices in Canadian dollars. Considering the Trek is in a good shape and doesn't come with fenders and racks. Saddle is the only thing I don't care about as I will replace it anyway. I have a 2k budget so the rest will go for racks, paniers, etc...

Considering prices & quality of the products, is it worth investing more for a new LHT?

Thanks!!

Edit: Forgot to mention this will become a long-distance touring bike, not just used for commuting. Will also test it out to see if it feels right of course!

If you are a Canadian buying in Canada you must tell us your secret for paying only 1000$CAN. MRSP in Canada is 1500$ for the complete.

You are absolutely right, looks like it's a bunch more in Canada...so much for $ being almost on par with the US...=P

As long as the drivetrain on the Trek is pretty fresh then I'd say go for the Trek.

For $800 I'd be all over the 520 like a cheap suit if it fits ya. You sure aren't giving up anything when it comes to quality.

Get the 520. I have a Surly LHT and love it but I would take a 520 for half price any day! take all that money you save and invest it into solid gear like tents, panniers, racks, and the works. You will enjoy the trip that much more because the rest of your gear will kick ass, and so will your bike!

So much for QBP giving the exclusivity to NRG, the Canadian importer.
Strangely enough, I paid only 475$ for my 56x26 frame last month, almost on par with the US.

Notice that I still went for the LHT, but it is a custom built. I had the LHT 56x700c prior and rode the 520 for a few months before that. None of these 'complete' bike comes anywhere near my built or yours if you decided to go that way. The day they'll be as sweet as mine they'll also fly. Cost is in the vincinity of 1500$CAN but I did all the work myself.
