89 Miyata 1000 Luxe Touring
My panniers finally arrived and I知 not disappointed with selecting the red ones. I知 not one to buy into what seems like hyperbole easily. But, I must admit, this is one fine example of lugged steel touring sweetness. This bike still has all-original components except for the WTB Pure V saddle, Vittoria Randonneur Cross tires, SKS P45 fenders, Shimano M540 SPD peddles, and of course cables. I rebuilt it from the frame up and am very proud about how it came out.
I致e been reading the Touring Forum for a while because I want to know more details about the sport. Being older, I知 draw to the vintage look of lugged steel. The TIG steel and modern geometries are probably superior in some ways, but if you池e a fan of older tourers, maybe this would be a good time to let us see them.

I'm going to embellish on my own thread by posting some pics of a ride I took today. The intent of this thread was not just to show-off my bike, but I was hoping to see or read what others have done to modernize their old steel touring bikes. For example, I could see myself eventually replacing the cup & cone BB with a cartridge and adding barcons among other things.

That's a very fine looking Miyata.
I worked in shops when that bike was selling new. I liked building up all the Miyatas in part because I knew the customer was getting a really solid bike at a good price. But of course was always excited about the 1000s because generally they were going places

That frame looks like it just came out of a time capsule! That's going to make one fine tourer. The salmon Kool Stops have great stopping power as well.

Here is my 85' Nishiki Continental. I've completely rebuilt it.
I bought the frame new back in 85'.
I was lucky to find a complete set of NOS Cannondale bags!

That's a very nice build. The frame looks very similar to the Miyata; heck, it looks even more like the Specialized Expedition I used to own. Somewhere along the way I read that Miyata probably made the Expedition frame as well as for others. While the Miyatas and Expedition get all the hoopla, other bikes of the era were their equals but still fly under the radar.

The Miyata 1000 was a real beauty. Too bad that the company just died a natural death even in Japan. I found a blog with catalogues of some of their bikes. We can still drool here, www.miyatacatalogs.com
