The reviews are neither here nor there. I'm wanting a cheap and portable solution to my tour next summer through Tennessee. There will be mostly camping (whenever we're in between a big city) and between my mate's backpack (he's sold on using a big hiking backpack) and I, we could fit in a small tent. Combine that with tying a sleeping bag to the rear rack and a handlebar bag, I think I'd be pretty well covered for my light packing needs.

I am worried about the reliability though. Which would be better, buying that or perhaps buying a hiking backpack and strapping it on the bike?

never tried it, just stopped by to say that you have some link fail there.

Are you planning hiking as part of your trip? If not, I don't see a benefit to a backpack on a tour at all.

If I was able to add pannier hardware to this goggle case, you can do it to your back pack.

i bought a while back and ended up returning it. it seemed okay, i really like the idea. basically a removable drybag in a backpack, if i remember right. the big problem was that there was a lot of heel strike. might have been the shape of it or just my specific situation, but it was never going to work, whereas my novara and ortlieb panniers worked fine. btw, i also used the backpack attachment with the ortlieb backroller panniers. not an acceptable solution at all, imo. poorly designed, ill fitting, and uncomfortable. too bad, because sometimes you just need to get your panniers through an aiport or train station comfortably.

Yeah. At one point we're going to stop in Gatlinburg, TN and the next day we're going to spend off the bike, hiking through the Smokies.

It isn't totally required, but using a backpack would be the best. I also saw this topic which had a solution in it.

I think I'd like to try it. All I'd have to do is put together a frame and then strap it on to the rack with velcro. Has anyone tried that PVC pipe rig?
