Another bike cross country documentary

What do you feel about these?

Is it exploitation? is it righteous to want to help the world with it? is it redundant?

can it change anything?

should he put his camera down and enjoy the ride?

Someone who could bike documentary

99% of the net is redundant. An original thought or enterprise is a rarity and to be highly prized.

On the surface, this just looks like another try at getting someone else to pay for their tour. They may succeed. I won't be donating.

OTOH, many people have been successful in raising millions for legitimate charitable causes with similar endeavors. I have no problem with that.

Uhm.....

It's probably redundant, but so what. Robert Frank crossed the US with a Leica back in the 50s, should no one else do the same? Is there a statute of limitations on the concept that expires?

It probably won't change anything, especially since the agenda seems awfully vague.

IMO the whole "donate to my bike trip across the country" is kind of weak. It's been discussed here a few times. I don't see any reason for him to stop the documentary, but it's lame to solicit donations -- especially given the rock-bottom cost of digital video these days.

Good for anyone who pursues their dreams.

The skeptic in me wonders if the trip will actually be made or if this is mere wishful thinking, or even a scam. People who accomplish these types of things usually don't rely on contributions. That's probably unfair and I do hope these fellows complete the trip and the film.

I'm all for helping people who help the world become a better place.

I'm very suspicious about people who solicit donations for very vague goals and who also don't provide any information about themselves and their background.

You lost me at, "independently funded documentary ethnographically examining America’s perspective of the environmen."

Have a good tour.

It sounds too much like, "Please pay for my vacation" to me. I hope they have a good time, but I won't be sending them any money. The whole soliciting money for bike tours thing rubs me the wrong way. Bike touring is a recreational activity. I have a little more respect if all of the money raised goes directly to a charity, but still don't think much of it. When the tour is funded with the donations I really call foul.

Equipped with my knowledge of film making and survival I will camp across the country, spread the good and distribute back to the community in the form of a documentary film.
I wonder if he's going to include documentary footage of himself at the end of a long day of riding that shows him snaring wild game and then scrounging for a suitable piece of flint and some firewood with which to cook it...

It does sound like "pay for my tour" and your about page is very vague. I'd suggest doing your trip and film first, then ask donations for the film.

I'm Sure it's no surprise that I am the one doing this documentary. I was very reluctant to add the donation button but my teacher had insisted. thanks to your insight, I will considor it's removal and make my goals clearer for they are broad and I have a more centered vision in my mind. No snarling wild game. But thats hilarious. I will have a white gas and beans and quinoa.
....or a photo of a Visa card and a Best Western. We have made a promise with ourselves to only sleep in what we can provide ourselves with or a pace offered to us by an individual.

My documentary isn't really about the trip is what i believe makes it unique. We just happen to be on the trip while we're filming it. We would like to go to the gulf and help out. and interview as many people as possible along the way to show how not only different we all are but try to expose the similarities between the mortgage broker and the farmer and show how were all in this together. because it sounds over played and very hopeful but i sincerely believe in everyone.

Thank you all so much for your honest criticisms. it is downright dumb to ask people for money for nothing over the internet. That's not part of the message I am broadcasting. Now I want you all to see the power of your input. THANK YOU
