My new (old) Raleigh Alyeska

I recently picked up a like new Alyeska that was donated to the co-op I volunteer at. Most of the bike is in excellent condition and I only have to replace cables, rebuilt the front hub, then tension and true the wheels.

So all I need/want to do to complete this thing is put on a longer stem, wider bars, a better saddle, maybe pedals, and aero levers.

One question:
The bike came with a 6speed 14-28 free wheel and 32-45-50 crank. Right now I'll be using it for commuting, but when I do go on a trip will it be worthwhile to go put a freewheel with wider range? I'm guessing 14-32 is the obvious choice. I weight 200lbs, the bike is around 25lbs, and then there will be gear to haul.

Nice score, that should clean up nicely..

You can also put a narrow suntour 7 speed on without any modification.
But the gearing you chose is spot on. The crank doesn't have the small ring of todays offerings but it will get the job done.
Nice bike!

PS: keep the QR's both on the same (non-drive) side.
