Your typical loaded weight

What is your typical loaded weight while touring? I'm looking at this figuring camping and taking a laptop(not iPad/iPhone but a real computer).

For my last 4 night, 5 day ride my gear weighed about 32 lbs. Most of it rain gear, had a lot of rain the first day and night. No idea on the Cannondale M300.

The weight of my bike, racks, fenders, basket, bins, tools, lights, iPhone / charging stuff and spare bike parts / tubes and such comes in at 45 pounds. Kind of high I guess. That’s the starting point without whatever I take along. Many I’m sure doing ultra-light touring are under that fully loaded.

Here is my scale setup bike work stand and luggage scale from wal-mart.

Rowan has informed me that the weight of our bicycles + gear is about 40 kg (88 lbs).

That's a little bit heavier than I like, but then it's a toss up between the weight of the gear and comfort. In the past, I've travelled with less but have been more uncomfortable on tours ... but because we'll be travelling for a minimum of 7.5 months this time, we opted to carry a few extra things for comfort.

Weight tends to be difficult to compare because people state it differently. Here's mine, from my last tour (46 days NJ to Newfoundland) in different forms:

Base Gear: 34 lbs.
(gear excluding the clothes I wear & supplies)

ALL Gear: 39 lbs. (base weight & clothes I wear including helmet, no supplies)

Supplies: 8 lbs (1.5 days food & fuel, 2 liters of water)

Total Weight: 80 lbs. (all gear, supplies, & bicycle)

I don't carry a notebook computer, but do carry an iPhone 4 and external Li battery. The iPhone, battery, charging cables are about one pound.

BTW: I do consider the iPhone a real computer.

I weighed my bike before starting for the beach on June 24,including lights, fenders, racks, panniers, bags and their contents by picking it up while standing on the bathroom scales--accurate right? The bike weighed 49 lbs. more than it did stripped for the Assault on Mt. Mitchell. The only electronics I carry are a cell phone and an AM/FM radio with headphones.

Typically, 35 - 45 lbs for panniers, gear, food, and water for a 5-9 day trip.

For my just-completed Northern Tier ride, mostly camping, no computer: 17 pounds base weight of packs, 27 pounds for the bike with accessories, from zero to 10 pounds of food and water.

I've found that the gear weight for a 1 week trip is about the same as that for a 3 month trip.

Mine varries enormously depending on how much water (the biggest factor), how much food, and expected weather. The bike + whatever it always wears is slightly north of 30#. Gear, bags, and suplies add anywhere from 15 to 40 pounds. All my trips are under a week, self supported, and may or may not have resuply options enroute.

Agreed, but sometimes I carry less on a longer trip. If I'm going to carry something for several months, I think about it much more carefully or I might feel justified to buy something lighter.

I heard a saying in the hiking community, "The farther you go, the less you carry." I believe the converse is true as well.

For me the big variable is clothes. During a one week trip, climate change is generally less, and generally more predictable. For a three month trip I'll usually bring a wider range of layers.

I am guessing about 95 to 100 pounds for everything. Includes tent, cooking gear, food, water, tablet computer, all clothes including what I wear while riding, spares (including a spare tire) and tools.

After my last trip I was quite surprised to find that my panniers, handlebar bag and duffel that goes on the back rack weighed 12 pounds empty. Add that to a steel framed bike with heavy duty wheels with robust tires and you have a lot of weight before you add the first item to your luggage.

And that's part of the reason we're travelling with only 2 panniers each, instead of the "usual" 4.
