Patagonia stuff is overpriced. You can get clothing and gear that is just as good at better prices. Try LL Bean or REI. Their stuff lasts just as long. My wife has a softshell jacket that works just as well as my Mountain Hardware (another designer brand) jacket and cost half the price. That said, I'm told that Patagonia will repair or replace for free for the life of the item.

I've never found that to be the case. I've tried the cheaper versions of outdoor clothing and the fit/finish/performance has not been equivalent to the more expensive brands.

Having said that you don't have to pay full price for Patagonia/North Face etc... most of the stuff I own from these companies was bought at 30%-50% off retail. As long as you can wait for sales and buy their stuff opportunistically it's not badly priced.

a patagonia puffy vest or their helium/dragonfly wind shells fencelean.jpg are not that expensive and would be a valuable addition to a cyclotourists wardrobe.

always buy premium gear only when it's on sale is my MO for premium gear.. i just got a new down vest from the patagonia for about 50 bucks off retail.

i've been a long time fan of patagonia since the early 80's.

interestingly enough, back in the 90's patagonia had some GREAT cycling specific shell layers. they had a set stretch waterproof pants with reinforced seat. Great gear, i got a set of those as compensation for doing some work for the local patagonia store.

good stuff, great core philosophy, strong enviro ethos. patagonia stands apart from many gear purveyors with this company commitment to sustainability and giving back.

I don't know if it matters to you, but I neglected to note that Patagonia uses organic cotton for much of its gear, fleece made in part with recycled plastic bottles, and much of its clothing is produced domestically, and all of it by workers who are paid a fair wage. It's pretty hard to find gear without "Made in China" labels stitched inside these days.

Patagonia stuff is great. I still have a few pieces left over from the 70s, I go back to the GPIW days. For the most part it is too expensive, up here, and never discounted.

If Up Here = Canada then you should know that Patagonia is often discounted in the Great White North. I have bought most of the stuff I own here at the change of season sales [winter to summer and vice versa] that occur like clock work twice a year. Since I wear a popular size [men's medium] I actually have better luck at these sales then going to the big Patagonia clearance stores in the US that seem to have limited stock in men's medium and large.

I like the Patagonia items that I own, but they typically are a bit expensive so I don't own that many.

BTW: A bit off of the original topic, but if on tour on the Trans America and passing through Dillon MT their outlet is a nice stop. They mail stuff home for cyclists at no extra charge.

I think the one item of Patagonia clothing I bought on sale at MEC in Canada last year is the bee's knees -- I almost live in the long-sleeve top on our current travels. But like most good things, i couldn't find another in an MEC in Calgary about six weeks ago.
