Posting a bike - Europe to New Zealand
In the hopes that somebody here already did something similar: I'm planning on sending my touring bike by mail from Europe to New Zealand. Since I don't have an address that I can use, I probably have to send it poste restante. So far, so good. But could I run into trouble with customs? And what about the organical matter? Will there be checks when I pick up the parcel? Or can it happen that the parcel will be held back at customs? I don't really want to travel 100s of miles to some customs building far away from where I'm going to arrive myself. Any bad / good experiences? Things to do? Things to avoid? Thanks!

NZ is notorious for its organics checks so it's good you are checking. Going through the airport they held me up and went through a cleaning procedure. But that was years ago. Here's a link that you email them about. There's a phone number too.

I'm going through the process of shipping all my household possessions from Canada to Australia (which I think has similar checks for organic material etc.) as NZ ... and yes, customs can hold the whole process up. It took about 3 weeks for my things to clear customs. It is possible that if you can't be there yourself, you might need to arrange for a customs agent or something to handle the process.
