I wouldn't say it this way, because the bike itself looks really nice and I imagine it is fun to ride. At least as long as you don't have to climb up hills with panniers. I just wouldn't want to take a single speed or fixed gear bike for touring.

Yea it is a whole lot of fun to ride because it is my favorite bike and fixed is always nice but once I got up into the bigger hills of Virginia I started feeling the burn. I still had a great time but I don't plan on killing my back and knees with a setup like this for the rest of my life.

Well done man. I planned to do the 2009 Houston-Austin MS150 fully loaded and fixed. The bike ended up being a 60lbs beast. The first day got rained out but I rode the second day loaded anyway. I didn't think I was going to be able to walk Monday.

You are a beast for knocking out that kind of tour fixed. Very well done.

With your large spoke area you could consider taping 200 Clift Bars to the front wheel.

I`ll be danged! I`ve seen a few reports of people touring on those puppies, but always with a sag wagon. Can you get S&S couplers built into the rim for suitcase packing?

Hmm, can't top the penny farthing

The complete writeup is here but suffice to say that was for a 3 day solo offroad tour. I'd call it "ultralight" but I have a bit further to go. Epic Design framebag and "gas tank" (on top tube).

The sleeping bag was usually mounted a bit better than that, but now I have a custom saddle pack on order.

Never done a header, and no real plans to . Paying attention is the best way to prevent that. Never a dull moment to say the least.

Small pegs in the back help for mounting / dismounting. It's quite a different story loaded though. With a rack (like the picture), the amount of foot-room for mounting is about 2cm. With spine-mounted gear, the peg is fully functional, but you must swing your leg around the gear -_-.

Nope. You had bad timing!
I like your setup though- probably the roadie-est bike to ever star in a Bikepacking tour report. I love heavy duty road bikes!

I guess the question a lot of folks have, is there an advantage to spending $100 more on a waterproof pannier, then a regular pannier with a $10 waterproof stuff sack or a 10¢ plastic garbage bag inside to keep stuff that needs to be kept dry, dry.

A lot of those water-proof panniers have other beneficial properties as well. Not just water-proofing. Just look at Arkel. Those are nearly indestructible and extremely easy to use, on top of being mostly water-proof.

All packed for my first self-supported shake down tour. All went well!

'09 Specialized Tricross Sport. Changed the 30t to a 26t. Bike plus gear weighed in at 100 lbs.
