Yeah, no injuries!

I was trying to squeeze past the parked semi while going 1km/hour, but there was less than a foot of concrete between the semi and the little hill. I was massively paranoid because it was the same stretch of road in Thailand where that British bicycle touring couple were hit and killed.

handle bars

nice setup. I like the collapsible frame. The handle bars aren't stock - what brand are they

rwwf, who are you addressing? Are you talking about my Surly LHT Deluxe (that has butterfly handle bars) as opposed to drop bars?

This is my lightly loaded Marin Four Corners Touring Bike. I don't think I'll ever ride it much more laden than this (with the exception of more food) because I'm also a backpacker; all my gear is very light, compact, and transitions between backpacking and touring very well. I've modified the cockpit drastically since this photo. Now the bike has bull-bars and Paul Reverse Levers which allowed me to switch over to v-brakes instead of cantis (which I hated for many reasons). This photo was taken on a short two-day ride around Lake Tahoe with my wife. This was my first time to Tahoe and I highly recommend riding around it. Two-days is very leisurely as the whole trip around the lake is only 70 miles or so, allowing much time to stop along the shore and take in the views and relax. There is just one "bike-in/walk-in" campground around the lake which we did use.

Good to know about Tahoe, we just got our orders to move that way, East of Sacramento in August. Areas look great out that way.

My road bike set up for a light weekend tour - bolted on the rack from my commuter, a cheap pannier on the left, sleeping bag wrapped in a waterproof bike cover wrapped in a plastic bag on the right. 12 other fellows, free choice of the route and pace, sunny weather, a "game" of "carry an egg 100 km without it breaking on a bike". 150 km total distance, most of it on paved roads but also 30 km or so on gravel. I didn't even bother to swap my 23 mm tires for 28 mm ones. https://picasaweb.google.com/1057095...eat=directlink

Bmike, I`m curious about your "knee clearance". With that roll on top of your DT (top pic), do your knees brush the cargo and it just doesn`t bother you, or does everything clear? I tried (briefly) riding with a load under my TT and the slight contact with each pedal stroke drove me bonkers. I`m not sure if I`m just overly sensitive to that or if my odd leg positioning is to blame. I`m on the verge of being able to ditch the panniers for nice weather weekends, and being able to stash a little bit in the front triangle would probably be enough to make that happen.

Re clearance, I've often wondered about that too, I am certain that any rubbing would drive me bonkers too....
That said, I am still really intrigued by the ultralight approach, especially for a trip on singletrack or fireroads, it just looks like heaps of fun.

none that i remember or notice.
that bag has been replaced with a proper frame bag. still no rub.

i cannot use a mountain feedbag on bars on the fargo. i hit that with my knee all the time when standing to climb. that makes me nuts.
but inside the triangle, on the tt, etc... nope.

And Bmike--

That Fargo rig is excellent. Trekking style bikes usually seem offputting to me -- overloaded and too clunky to dial up the speed on the open road. That one is just asking to be ridden. Great pics.

This is my fully-loaded rig just before setting off for the 2013 Spring Credit Card Tour. Day 1, Day 2 a b, Day 3.

The idea with this tour is to make it like a group training ride, only carrying the bare minimum (sandals, running shorts, lightweight shirt) to hang out in and around a motel after 90 miles or so. The shorts and shirt are in an Eagle Creek Pack-It™ Compression Sac, sandwiched between the Adidas slides, which are strung underneath the saddle bag.

My set-up for my 1st to 4th tour (each of about 500km) I have added and changed something each time... soon I'll be leaving for my 5th and final tour (i.e. it will be a rather long one). The gear will obviously change again =D

that's brilliant! I guess you don't have to worry about passing traffic though? such a wide rig would be tough here in Japan. I want some more pics, a close-up or two =D
