My backpack loaded (30lbs) up with everything I'd for a long distance backpacking trip rides in the trailer (35lbs) with the pup (65lbs). Basic tools/lock/tubes/everything I usually carry commuting is in the seat-pack and handlebar bag on the bike.
Took the rig on its maiden overnight trip the other day. 40 miles to the park, stashed the bike in the woods, hiked and camped, and rode 45 miles back the next day. It was surprisingly easy to pull the extra 130ish pounds using lower gears and spinning but I was absolutely beat by the time I got home.

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

Cool, but even if something like that made sense for a long trip, I'm looking to take it easy on the pup.
I'm building up the bike so that my pup and I can finish our hike on the AT. We left a couple years back from Springer Mt. GA and made it a little past half way before the pup said he had enough and we headed home. The plan is to ride from FL to Waynesboro, VA, following the general path of the AT (Six Gap, Blue Ridge Parkway, etc) then paddle the Shenandoah River to Harpers Ferry, WV where we will pick up the AT and hike to Maine.
I don't know how far the pup will be able to hike this time, but I'm prepared to leave him with friends while I finish the hike if he cant make it. I want to at least take him on a nice long adventure if and before he gets left behind.

Why wouldn't your pup be able to make the hike?

The front panniers are 30-yr-old Cannondale bags that I retrofitted with Lone Peak mounting hooks and bungee. I always liked the functionality of the bags but never cared for the original mounting system. The Lone Peak mounting system works great and was easy to retrofit. The details are on my tumblr.

Lanovran, I have the same Axiom rear panniers and a set of the Axiom Cartier up front. They've got a few thousand miles on them and so far I love them!
