OMM Sherpa front rack on 26" LHT
misc tidbits for those looking for front racks on 26" forks that mount lower than regular one size fits all racks meant to fit on 700c wheels. I've installed an OMM Sherpa front rack on my 26" wheeled LHT. Instead of using the axle mounts I removed them and installed it straight on the top eyelets with 1/4" spacers to clear the fork tips and jury rigged straps to the midfork eyelets (misplaced one of the brake boss mount angle brackets).
This brought the rack down with plenty of clearance for fender and bottom of the rack using tall 1.75 tires. The handling is quite good, while not as rock solid stable as low riders on the 700c I'm not as anxious coming up to the edge of a curb with a full load and it's slow speed maneuvering is still better than the 700C fully loaded. On the 700c LHT with full panniers moving through curvy tight sections on a bike path required more attention than the 26" version with full panniers front and back. Low riders on 26" front wheels are too low for my comfort.

Too bad - the OMM Sherpa is one heck of a bomb-proof mount design when onto the bosses and axle as designed. Sounds like you had some specific reasons, but I'm just saying - I want to get one of those just because I love the mounting.

Looking at the other thread where the Surly front rack had the lower bracket break with heavy use it occurred to me that this rack as mounted on the top eyelet would carry just as much stuff for almost a two pounds less in total rack weight. The point of the post was that for those who didn't want to be committed to the axle mount boss the rack works just fine mounted conventionally on the top dropout eyelet of a 26" wheel fork. I'd be surprised if it was any less "bomb-proof" on a practical level.
