I picked up a children's book at the library the other day for my toddler: Supergrandpa.
This story is true and entirely absurd. This guy, in his 80s, rode from Sweeden to Jerusalem on a 3-speed--in 1959!

In the same vein, Dervla Murphy rode a one speed bike from Ireland to India in 1965 starting in the worst Winter in memory. I believe that she was still riding in Africa and writing fascinating accounts of her tours recently at age 78(?).
