North Central & Heritage Rail Trails (MD/PA)

I'm planning a trip on the North Central and Heritage Rail Trails from the southern terminus in Cockeysville, MD to York, PA. I would stay in a hotel in York and return to Cockeysville the next day. Is the parking lot at Cockeysville safe for overnight parking? Any near-trail hotel recommendations in York? Other advice welcome.

Parking is safe BUT(I think) is not allowed. I believe folks park at some of the merchant parking lots on York rd. There's a large grocery store there. Might try asking a gas station attendant if he would mind if you left your car there since it is the wknd and only overnight. Give him $10 for the hassle. There's one on the corner of York rd and whatever street it is to the trail start.

Sycamore,

The Wegman's is the large grocery store and that would work, I'm sure they wouldn't even notice a car overnight. Also the park and ride is there just down from Wegman's would probably work. I'm thinking they'd be a better bet then paying a gas station.

If you have any troubles in the PA section give me a call I'm only to the north about 25 minutes and could swing down and give you a hand or whatever if you want I'll PM my number to ya.

If you want a partner for part of the ride I could meet you in York and ride to New Freedom where my wife could pick me up (her parents live down there)

Either way good luck and enjoy the ride. Its a nice trail for a weekend tour.

Mike

My first bike-camping trip was to Gifford Pinchot State Park in PA, about 14 miles northwest of York; I rode to York via the MD & PA rail trails. I parked my car at the Phoenix Road lot of the NCR Trail (mile marker 2). I was familiar with it because I used to live less than 2 miles away from it. I guess you're not supposed to leave vehicles overnight (? -- I don't remember seeing signs to that effect, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's true), but it's a tiny, not-heavily-used dirt lot, and much more isolated, roadway-wise, than the NCR terminus at Ashland. So I knew that (a) I probably wouldn't be inconveniencing anyone by leaving my car there; and (b) it wasn't likely to be noticed by some bored patrol officer in search of something to write up.

Rode up Saturday morning, spent the night, came back early Sunday evening, car was unmolested. This was 2 years ago, not sure if anything has changed.
