florida December touring
Can someone advise re: prevailing wind direction on Flordia east coast in December? I'm considering a tour between Miami and Charleston, SC. Which direction makes most sense in December? Any other advice/experience appreciated. Is the coast route a nice ride? Is December an OK time?
I have old adventure cycling book and map but it doesn't comment about December winds.

Don't be surprised to find low temps at night in the 30s and daytime highs in the 50s from Charleston to down around Jacksonville. As you go farther south the temps will rise a little.
As for the prevailing winds, they generally come from the NW or W around here year round which should be the same for Charleston, Brunswick, et al... So, I can't imagine one direction would be better than the other (north to south or south to north).
Personally, I wouldn't start/end in either Charleston or Miami. Either would be a bear to get in or out of what with the traffic and all.
Good luck with the ride!

I live near the Florida Georgia state line and would consider January to be colder than December. I would start in Charleston and ride south. I ride 20 miles inland. I find winds to be out of the west until about 10-11am and then change to be out of the East. It has to do with heating and cooling land and water masses and warm air rising and cold air sinking. This is in addition to prevailing winds from fronts moving in.

Generally, strong winds on Florida's east coast, in the winter months, revolve around the cold fronts as they make their way south. As a front approaches, winds can blow hard from S to SW. After its passage, if it doesn't stall, the wind direction will most likely change to N-NW. It's really a matter of timing. Aside from such influences, fair weather usually means mild to moderate winds...nothing too strong.

...not too bad, really. From St. Augustine south to Fort Lauderdale, one can pretty much follow the coast road (A1A) with occasional jumps over to US 1. Traffic is there, of course, but most motorists seem well conditioned to expect cyclists on the beach roads. Much of the heavier traffic is funneled off by the nearby N-S highways.
Without local knowledge, you may want to avoid Miami as a starting or ending point.

Hi Bonnie;
We live and bike in So. Florida along the A1A coastline. The Boca Raton Bicycle Club rides all year along the coast and winter is the most comfortable. Our temps are low 80's with low humidity (for us). Wind direction is less predictable in terms of direction...changes daily although the prevailing winds in winter are from the EAST.
If you are interested, you are welcome to ride with us. Just check our website at BocaRatonBicycleClub.com for the ride schedule which is posted one month in advance. Our rides cover a 70 mile stretch from Fort Lauderdale to the Palm Beach Inlet,generally.
We have had some coastal storm damage from hurricanes, especially in northern Palm Beach County and North. But none of it should interfere with your ride.
Let us know.
