Help doing touring conversion... PLEASE!

Hi everyone,

I have this bike, and I want to convert it to a touring bike, Is this even a good idea, and if it is, what would I need to change as far as parts? I would like to get a rigid fork for it as well, but am not sure on right size to get? I am not to worried about the cost, but under a grand would be nice... for complete conversion.

Any advice on tools and spare parts that you bring with you would be good to know as well.

I realize asking someone to baby me through this is lame, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

For under a grand you can buy a very good old touring bike from the eighties on Ebay or Craigslist. Or you could get a rigid highend Mtb from 90-93 and convert that. Or you could buy a new touring rig from Bikesdirect

If what you really want is a conventional touring bike, and with your budget, take plodderslusk's advice. The bike you've got is too dedicated to sketchy trail riding. Leave it as is for the day you decide to tackle the GDR, pulling a trailer.

The Windsor Tourist from www.bikesdirect is a proven paved road touring machine.

The Tubus Company makes a nice front rack for suspension forks,
by fitting to the fork crown, there still is active suspension, without hanging mass
off the sliders at the bottom ..

and put on a rear rack, say one made for discs [they need a bit more clearance around that mech]

and Go..

I see all sorts of bikes and riders headed down the coast, here..

the 'tour' is the journey not the equipment.

CGOAB is full of the kind of lists and such you seek.

Look for a rigid 29er like the GT Peace 9r Multi 29er. They cost less than $1000 and you'll end up with a better bike than converting that Trek.

I don't know if your chainstay is long enough to prevent your feet from hitting panniers at the rear. If you want to build from scratch, you can look at my post below for more info.

If you chose to go with a dynamo front hub and front and rear dynamo lights, this could be a choice
Busch&Muller D'Toplight Plus rear dynamo light 17 euro
https://www.bike-x-perts.com/en/produ...ucts_id/133927
Busch&Muller Lumotec Lyt Plus 25 lux front light for dynamo hub 24 euro
https://www.bike-x-perts.com/en/produ...ucts_id/359500
(you could also choose the IQ Cyo 60 lux front light but that's 64 euro)
https://www.bike-x-perts.com/en/produ...ucts_id/359497
Shimano DH-3N72 dynamo hub 58 euro (actually, I wanted to choose the Deore LX model for this message but the spoke calculator did not include this one, I can only measure it once I order it)
https://www.bike-x-perts.com/en/produ...ucts_id/242167
(The spokes for this would be 283mm both sides with the WTB Freedom Ryder 23 rim)
DT Swiss Champion 283mm spokes $0.49 each (times 36 = $17.64)
https://www.cambriabike.com/shopexd.asp?id=92390
So, if you chose a dynamo hub 58 euro, front light 24 euro, rear light 17 euro (plus the 283mm spokes minus the 290mm spokes and Tiagra front hub), it would be $1539.26 without the shipping from bikexperts
I'm a little surprised I did all this work. But, please tell me if I missed any bike parts.
You can always use the frame sizing calculator at ColoradoCyclists.
