Journal of my recent month-long tour in the UK

Starting in mid-April, 2011, I toured around the UK for just over 4 weeks. I logged over 1200 miles. I rode in England, Wales and Scotland and had more sunny days then rainy ones.

It was a fabulous trip!

I've written a journal of my ride called Going Up and Down in the UK, with many of the 1500 photos I took during this tour.

At 34 days, this is my longest bike tour to date. It is also my longest bike touring journal!

I hope you find it interesting.

Great one

I'm at work, so I just read a couple of the Scotland entries at lunch. Great journal! Was it early enough in the year that the notorious Scottish midges were not about?

Interesting. Being a local, and a frequent tourist, I am very familiar with a lot of the territory you visited and it's interesting to read a stranger's observations.

Otley is pronounced Otley, not Utley.

My wife is English and instructed me to pronounce Shrewsbury as "Shrosebry." When I got there and did so, I was accused of trying to put on a "posh" accent.

The people I talked with in Otley, corrected me when I said "Otley" by telling me it is "Utley."

Oh well.

I wasn't bitten by any flying insects. I was told that the midges come out later in the year, more toward June.

The only problem I had with insects was in England where they had large black flying insects with dangling legs (looked like mosquitoes on steroids) would hover about mouth level and get swallowed. But, they didn't bite.

Just took a quick look at your journal Ray, and enjoyed the writing and the photos. Especially the ones around my old stompin' ground, Kendal in the Lake District. Looking forward to reading more.

I sympathise. When touring in North America recently, my pronunciation of "coffee" was clearly incomprehensible to the natives, who insisted on "cahfee". Two peoples divided by a common language.

Good stuff! Is there a way to view the entire journal on a single page?

No, there isn't. The journal pages are generated out of a database one day at a time. It never occurred to me to generate them all on a single page. This one would be huge!

The correct name for these is crane fly, but most people call them daddy long-legs. As you say, pretty harmless, though some people get a bit spooked by them. Don't you have them in the US?

The crane flies we have in California look like this:

I always think of them as flying spider food.

Called them 'mosquito wolves' where I grew up. Also, I've heard them called 'mosquito hawks' as well.
