any "must ride" roads in northern US plains states to MN?

Will have an opportunity to ride something good in the northern plains states in the next couple of months and wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions for 'must ride' routes or roads.

I'm thinking like the Avenue of the Giants, Capital Reef Scenic Drive, North Cascades highway, Columbia River Gorge, Highway to the Sun type of recommendations, obviously with less vertical relief, if the upper midwest has anything remarkable in the way of scenic routes.

Maybe with a great view of Mount Rushmore? a beautiful river valley with willows and cliff escarpments thru prairielands?

any tips or highlights would be greatly appreciated!

Might be too far south for you, but the Sandhills area of Nebraska. Don't know the specific roads, but a little Googling should reveal much on the area.

I just finished a coast to coast two days ago. If you are considering Columbia River Gorge, I would think very carefully about it. East to West was really difficult. The winds are one thing, but the traffic and narrow shoulders added to the drama. You are also on Interstate through several sections.

One of my favorite areas was the Bighorn Mountains. We rode from Buffalo to Ten Sleep and Ten Sleep canyon was breathtaking. I understand the northern route out of Buffalo (hwy 14) out of Buffalo into Greywolf is also stunning.

Spearfish Canyon down into Rapid city was also a highlight.

If Canada is an option, consider riding near the Georgian Bay and up through the Manitoulin Islands.

You can check out our trip here if you like.http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/whenlife and ask me specific questions about any section that you find appealing. It is all still a bit of a blur right now so i might be able to be of more help that way. Have a great time.

    Northern Plains??
Do you also mean Northern Rockies, too?

Also - when you say "next couple of months" that can mean different things.
Last year was a record snowfall year and long winter.
Roads in national parks and mountain passes can close as early as late September.
Although there can be nice days in October, there can also be blizzards.

If you plan to be riding in Idaho/Montana/Wyoming in October -
you should opt for the lowest crossings possible.
Possibly US 12 to Missoula, MT 200 east into the Plains.

If you have never done it, you should absolutely ride Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park.
(But be aware that it will close for contruction some time after Labor Day.)

short ride, cherry pick..... next couple of months aug sept, used to snow tours , no worries.

just looking for scenic road suggestions anywhere in the Eastern MT/WY to Minnesota swath anything north of I-90 or thereabouts.

I'm thinking roads like going to the sun road, but east of the rockies.

US 240 out of Wall, SD thru badlands national park is a likely candidate. in fact, looks like there's some good riding in the badlands national park, there's even some gravel road riding to be done out thereabouts. woot!
