Lone Peak P-099 Sundance Front Panniers is the quality good?
Hi, I am SO close to getting my Surly LHT. I am still looking at panniers. How is the quality of Lone Peak products? I am thinking of a Arkel handlebar bag and not sure on front/rear set-up. I plan on week long tours to start this Fall and next year. Would like to do a cross country trip in a few years. Do you think the Lone Peaks will hold up over the years or should I look at Ortliebs?(Arkel main bags seem a little heavy).

Ortlieb, Jandd, Lone Peak and Arkel are all good solid brands. I use Ortlieb, personal preference. I also have Lone Peak handlebar bag that I use with the Ortlieb. You will need to choose: How water proof do I want. Lots of pockets for organization? or just one big sack. And overall durability. If you want Lone Peak or Ortlieb I highly recommend you buy them from Wayne at The Touring Store.

Haven't used it much yet, but it is similar to the old Performance one that I beat to death for 12 years. I like the overall size of it and it has the map case which is a primary requirement for me.

I just used a pair of Lonepeak P-150s on my trip, and my friend had the P400s. The quality is great, so no issues there at all. I used an Ortlieb handlebar bag so I'd have something waterproof. If you want waterproof bags, LP isn't your best option. I put all my gear in waterproof stuff sacks, and that worked great. On the days where we had prolonged rain, we sometimes had a bit of standing water in the bags. I would buy and use them again, but I'd also consider just getting the Ortliebs for convenience. My decision was also driven by weight savings (we did a lightweight credit card tour, i.e., not fully loaded).

I have the P99's they are very good quality. I also have Arkel bags. If I was to do it again, I would get all Lone Peak, the Arkels are too heavy. I have the GT28's and the GT54's - the 28's are fine, but the 54's are covered with stupid gimmicks. I just wanted some pockets, not all the silly removable flaps. Next time I'm getting the LP 400's for the rear bags.
The L.P. zippers are a little lighter weight than the Arkel Zippers, but I haven't had any trouble with them. They've been on about 8,000 miles of touring, and are in good shape still. A squirrel did eat a hole in one of them - but I doubt that would have been any different with Arkels. Ortlieb may have kept the squirrel out.
+1 to TheTouringStore. Also, the L.P.'s have a hook that clips over your rack, so decide on the rack first, then you can get the right size clips with the bags.
